Formula defaulting to editable in new model experience

I'm getting used to the new model experience, and overall it's a good step forward.  However, I have one major frustration, which is that the formula goes straight into edit mode when I expand it out.  

 

In most occasions, when I click the 'expand' arrows on the formula bar, it is just so that I can read the formula in full, not because I want to start editing it.  Often I might want to click through multiple line items one at a time whilst seeing the full formula, but because the formula window is only available in edit mode, that's not possible.
